Interactive Paper

It’s not the first time a company has tried to merge paper and digital. So far, success has been elusive and no technology has managed to prevail. Now, however, an Austrian company seems to be on the right track. At least the concept makes sense to me.

The following case:

  • I print a magazine, a book, a teaching material
  • I produce single or all pages with the new Interactive Paper
  • The production process of the print runs as usual
  • The design is done normally through a layout program
  • However, in the layout I define a place where I can place a smartphone
  • I also design “buttons”, i.e., hotspots, through which I can control an action

As soon as I place my smartphone on the Interactive Page, my screen integrates into the page and I can bring various actions to the screen via the buttons. Interestingly, the buttons are wirelessly powered by the smartphone so that they can function at all. The whole thing then looks like this, as demonstrated on the homepage of the Austrian startup:
