I’ve been an avowed fan of mmhmm since its launch, a fantastic app that allows you to spice up video calls a bit. mmhmm has received several updates in recent months, constantly expanding the user interface and possibilities. When I record a screencast on the desktop (Mac or Win), I now always use mmhmm.
Better Webcalls with Mmhmm
I can – similar to Loom – present my desktop windows and be visible in the foreground or background for the viewer. However, its use is not limited to program windows; I can also show texts and images, play videos, use GIFs, or play and comment on entire presentations. I can be in different virtual rooms and prepare several scenes, each with its own design.
Brand new is the ability to seamlessly switch between live presentation and pre-made scenes in mmhmm. The result can be live-streamed, used as a virtual camera in Teams or Zoom, or recorded directly to the hard drive.
More Fun with Ooo
Now the guys and gals from mmhmm have just launched a new, complementary project: ooo.
(Kudos right away for the successful naming 😀 They want to balance out the missing vowels from mmhmm with this project.)
So what is ooo? First of all, it’s a web application that currently (in beta) works best in Chrome and Firefox. When you start ooo, you immediately see the concept of mmhmm rooms. You can choose different backgrounds and then place yourself in this room via video. The trick: you can now invite up to nine other participants into the room. They all appear on the screen and can talk to each other. It works simply via a link, no plugins or extra tinkering necessary.
The whole thing is primarily just fun, but it could certainly also represent a quick and uncomplicated way to meet for a coffee chat in business. The environment is a bit more colorful and playful than functional competitors like wonder.me or thing.online.
Conclusion: a fun first attempt, currently in beta. Trying it out costs nothing.
